Health Care Reform
Congress has been considering health care reform legislation. After months of debate, Congress passed a single health care reform bill, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590). On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed this measure into law. In a statement on this legislation, Francis Cardinal George, President of the U.S.Conference of Catholic Bishops, stated that the bishops oppose the legislation "in its current form." The Cardinal noted that, among other serious flaws, the bill would "expand the role of the federal government in funding and facilitating abortion and plans that cover abortion." The statute's deficiencies need to be corrected.
